Counseling Club Establishes Scholarship
By Laura Nelson

When Sul Ross-Rio Grande College graduate counseling students and alumni of the program share their ideas and work on a project, great things happen.

The Graduate Counseling Club formed in 2007 and members have hosted a summer Counseling Fiesta for their supporters for the past five years to celebrate their achievements. The gala took on new significance following the death of one of their graduates from Eagle Pass. The group started the Pedro "Pete" Carrillo fund in his honor and once the account is endowed with $10,000, they will begin awarding scholarships to students within the program. According to club co-adviser and RGC professor Dr. Todd Russell, approximately $6,000 has been raised to date. Dr. Monica Gutierrez also advises the group.

This year's event, held in August at the Two Step Cantina & Grill in San Antonio, featured various auction items, but artwork created by at-risk youth in the area outsold everything else. Each hand crafted piece, ready for framing, included a brief, anonymous biography of the artist. In addition to the annual Fiesta, the Counseling Club holds community fundraisers throughout the year.

The Master of Education in Counseling program at Sul Ross-RGC specializes in bicultural and bilingual counseling. Graduates of the program can be certified as school counselors and/or licensed as professional counselors.
